ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES OF VARIOUS DEPARTMENTS 2010-2011

All the Nine departments of the College have been aiming to provide a conducive learning environment and an effective platform for the students. Curricular and Co curricular activities are designed to enkindle the potentiality of the students.

Department of Information Technology

The Department of Information Technology has been conducting various activities to showcase the innate talents of the students..

(i)Testing the Communication Skills:

This activity was designed to hone the communication skills of the students in order to cater to the needs growing demands in the IT industry.

(ii) G.K. Quiz:

The objectives of this programme is to inculcate knowledge of current affairs among the students. It helps them to acquire a basic knowledge about the competitive examinations.

(iii) Science Quiz:

The Science Quiz is conducted to develop subject knowledge of the students , which helps them to score good marks.

(iv) Puzzle Solving:

This Puzzle Solving increases the intelligent quotient of the students. The questions are set to train the students in solving analytical questions in the competitive examinations.

(v) 'C' :

It is framed to provide a thorough knowledge about 'C' Programming language.

(vi) Paper Presentation:

It focuses on the new technologies in the Computer field. Moreover, students receive a wide knowledge about various topics.

(vi) IT-Day:

PG Students of IT department organize the IT day. They conduct animation, Quiz, Paper Presentations and Seminars for the UG Students.

Department of Computer Science

(i) Paper Presentation:

On 31st Dec 2010, Students of CS department presented papers on "Cloud Computing, Biometrics, Green Computing and Robotics". This event helps the Students to improve their subject knowledge.

(ii) Tutor Session:

On 28th Jan 2011, an Orientation was given to the students about the programmes such as C++, Java, Visual Basic etc., Demo Sessions were conducted on various Softwares like Flash, Photoshop, Snippy, Zooming , Folder Locking and PDF Converter.

(iii) Quiz:

On 5th Feb 2011, Quiz program was organized to assess the Student's knowledge in the subject and current affairs.

(iv) Animation:

On 12th Feb 2011 'Animation' works were exhibited to throw light on the creativity of the students and to enhance their knowledge. The students exhibited their creativity through their presentation on the following topics.

  • Population Explosion
  • Global Warming
  • Solar System
  • India 2020

(v) Reasoning/ Aptitude:

On 23rd Feb 2011, Aptitude Tests were conducted for the students to assess their intellectual traits. This assessment will improve their ability.

(vi) Inter Collegiate Meet:

Department of CS and IT conducted the first Intercollegiate Meet , 'UR- TECFEST-11' on 12th Jan 2011. 12 Colleges participated in various competitions such as Paper Presentation,Animation,Debugging and Software Development.Overall Shield was won by Arumugam Pillai Seethai Ammal Arts and Science College, Thirupathur.

Department of Mathematics

(i) Puzzle Solving:

On 23rd Feb 2011, Puzzles at various levels were given to the students, to enrich the students skill in puzzle solving.

(ii) Aptitude Solving:

On 21st Feb 2011, to train the students for competitive exams, aptitude test was conducted.

(iii) Mathematical Modeling:

On 23rd Feb 2011 this novel activity was conducted to represent a real life problem in a mathematical form. Students presented the mathematical problems using different models.

(iv) Quiz:

On 25th Feb 2011, General Quiz was conducted to improve the students' general knowledge and knowledge on current affairs..

(v) Paper Presentation:

On 17th Mar 2011, Students presented papers on "Application of Mathematics in various disciplines". This enables them to gain exposure in the field of applied mathematics

(vi) Weekly Seminars:

Weekly Seminars were given to the students on general mathematics.

(i) Inter Department Meet:

The department has organized the first Inter Department meet of our College, "UR ASTRAL-11" on 4th Feb 2011.

Mar 2011, Dr.N.Somasundaram, Head & Associate Professor, APSA College, Tirupathur delivered a special address on the valedictory function of the Arts Association.

(iv) Paper Presentation:

Students presented papers on various topics on 10th Jan 2011. Mr. M.Radhakrishnan, Head, Department of Business Administration, chaired the paper presentation session and judged the Competition.

(v) Group Discussion:

On 15th Mar 2011, Group Discussion on "Budget" was organized to impart knowledge to the students on Indian Economy and the role of economy in India's development.

(vi) Communication Skills:

On 9th Sep 2010, to get mastery over English language students organized a seminar on "How to improve Communication skills" .These session are conducted on a weekly basis.

(vii) Orientation for Competitive Examinations:

On 11th Feb 2011, a special measure was taken to create awareness among the students about the competitive examinations.

Department of Business Administration

(i) Marketing Myopia:

The seminar on "Marketing Myopia" was conducted by III B.B.A Students. Mrs. A.Muthupriya concluded the session.

(ii) Personality Development Skills:

To enhance the communication and soft skills of the students, Mrs. S.Jeyashree, Department In charge delivered a special address on "Personality Development Skills" to enhance the communication and soft skills of the students.

(iii) Recent Trends in Business:

To develop women entrepreneurs in our society, a seminar on "Recent Trends in Business" was conducted on 22nd Dec 2010. Mrs. S.Shanthi concluded the session.

(iv) Group Discussion:

A Group discussion on "Advertisement-its Pros & Cons" was conducted on 3rd Jan 2011.

(v) Paper Presentation:

Students presented papers on "Stress Management" on 8th Feb 2011. to enable students to learn how to strike a balance their personal & professional lives.

"The DNA Network" magazine was released by Dr. B.Vaseeharan on 19th Mar 2011. The magazine has collective information about advancements in Microbiology and Biotechnology.

Quiz:

Two quiz competitions were conducted on 7th sep 2010 and 24th Dec 2010.

Curricular Activities:

(i) Seminars

  • On Phonetics:
    Dr. J.John Sekar, Associate Professor, Department of English, American College, Madurai delivered a special lecture on the topic "Phonetics" [ the paper is included as an allied subject in the 3rd semester] on 15th Sep 2010.
  • On Shakespeare:
    Mr. S.Kulanthaivel, Assistant Professor, Department of English, St. Michael College of Engineering & Technology, Kalayarkovil delivered a special lecture on "Shakespeare" [ the paper is prescribed as a core paper in the 4th semester] on 28th Dec 2010.

Co-Curricular Activities:

"English Literary Association" conducted various competitions to Channelize and enhance the latent skills of the students, especially to hone their communication skills in English.

Essay Writing:

Essay writing competition was conducted on " The impact of literature on Life" on 20th Sep 2010 to develop the writing skills in English.

Debate:

 A debate on the topic "Cell phone- A Boon Or A Bane? was organized on 1st Oct 2010 to showcase the students skills in spoken language and logistics. Ms. S. Sakthi was the Judge

Spell and Win:

This competition was held on 27th Dec 2010 to enrich the vocabulary of the students in English. Students were asked to spell and give the meanings of the words.

Drama:

The drama competition was conducted on 11th Jan 2011 with a view of providing an effective platform to the students to exhibit their artistic and creative skills in English. Students enacted 4 plays on various themes.

Elocution:

An Elocution competition on "Status of English in India" was held on 5th Feb 2011. to make the students realize the importance of English as a universal language.

Quiz:

A quiz competition was organized on 19th Feb 2011 to enhance the subject and general knowledge of the students.

Extra Curricular Activities:

The students of I B.A and II B.A were taken to visit "Science Mela-2011" at Ananda College on 18th Jan 2011.The purpose of this visit is to provide an environment which enables them to equip their spoken and listening skills in English. Reports were collected from the students.

Seminars:

(i) Mr. V.Ramakrishnan, Associate Professor, APSA College, Tirupathur delivered a Special address on "Role of Reading Habit in Personality Development" on 17th Aug 2010.

(ii) Dr. M.Solayan, Former Professor and Head, Department of English and Foreign Languages, Alagappa University delivered a Special Address on "Tagore's Contribution to India" at the Valedictory function of English Literary Association on 15th Mar 2011.

BEYOND CURRICULAM


Road Safety Patrol

RSP was inaugurated at our College on 18.3.2011.Mr.Judson, Warden, Tamilnadu Traffic Police inaugurated the RSP unit of the college and postulated the safety measures and traffic rules. 310 students enrolled as RSP volunteers.

RSP unit of the college organized a rally to create awareness about the safety measures among public. The rally was flagged off by the Registrar, Alagappa University.

YRC:

Youth Red Cross was inaugurated in the college to inculcate social responsibility among the students.

RRC:

Red Ribbon Club has been inaugurated to create awareness about HIV and AIDS. It focuses on the role of students in the development of society.

RRC Activities:

10 Students attended a one day workshop on "Anti Tobacco Day" at Anandha College on 13th July 2010.

A one day Programme on 'Celebrating Life' is conducted on 4th Mar 2011 to bring about an awareness about HIV&_AIDS.

NSS Activities (2010-2011)

  • Students participated in World Classical Tamil Conference Torch Relay on 16th June 2010
  • An Orientation Programme was conducted for NSS students on 27th Aug 2010
  • 50 Students went to 'Muthumari Amman Temple' for hundi counting as an NSS activity on 17th Sep 2010
  • A seminar on Global Warming was delivered by Dr. S. KaruthaPandian, Dean ,Research, Alagappa University, on 29th Sep 2010.
  • Annual Special Camp was held at Koviloor from 8th to 14th Dec 2010.
  • Campus Cleaning was done on occasion of Republic Day on 25th Jan 2011.
  • Hundi Counting was undertaken in Muthumari Amman Temple on 2nd Mar 2011
  • Campus Cleaning was done due to the second Graduation Day celebration on 10th Mar 2011

Training and Placement Cell

The scholastic records of the graduates who aspire for placement are maintained by this cell. It also maintains information regarding career opportunities for fresh Arts and Science graduates. It provides information to the outgoing graduates as well as the old students of this College who are unemployed..
